Implementation of Biogas plants plays a major role in our success. Earlier, most of the households used to use firewood for cooking. The smoke created, led to health issues such as breathing problems, eye problems, etc. The kitchen area and cooking vessels would turn black and ultimately it was a mess to cook this way.
Biogas plants served as more than a solution for this problem. A biogas plant requires about 10 x 10 ft area, some cow dung to start off with and regular organic waste to keep it running. The input materials burn completely resulting in zero waste. It is an environment-friendly, economical and low-maintenance affair. This is the reason why not just financially weak but people from middle and upper middle class are opting for biogas units.
Multi-pronged and long-term benefits of biogas are already noticeable in villages. Housewives who used to spend a lot of time and energy for collecting firewood and cooking are now using that time for other productive tasks. The slurry generated through biogas is an excellent organic manure that is being used in the farms. Since biogas plants work well with cow dung, they are also becoming an extra income source for villagers who maintain their cattle well. More and more villagers are being encouraged to buy and maintain healthy cattle.
We at Bhagirath have availed easy loan and subsidy from district banks for biogas unit installations. The government has already given subsidy for biogas users. We have further eased out this process. As a result, now more than 5,000 biogas units are installed across Sindhudurga district. We are aiming 20,000 installations till 2020. There is an efficient team of 60 technicians for installation and after-sales services of biogas units.
